The Bronze Spade trophy is presented to Bernie Ecclestone for this explanation of what he really meant when he said

In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people able to get things done ... In the end he got lost so he wasn’t a very good dictator. Either he knew what was going on and insisted, or he just went along with it - either way he wasn’t a dictator.

Now he says:

During the 1930s Germany was facing an economic crisis but Hitler was able to rebuild the economy, building the autobahns and German industry. That was all I meant when I referred to him getting things done. I’m an admirer of good leadership, of politicians who stand by their convictions and tell the voters the truth. I’m not an admirer of dictators, who rule by terror.

All clear? No? And what did Ecclestone's PR* do with the paragraph repudiating the implication that Hitler was "persuaded to do things" that he may not have wanted to do?

Update: According to Stephen Pollard, this turns out to be none other than the P of D himself.

Further update: According to Paul Waugh, the P of D's involvement consisted of saying: "You should take advice before doing such interviews in the future."
