John Rentoul

John Rentoul is chief political commentator for The Independent on Sunday, and visiting fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, where he teaches contemporary history. Previously he was chief leader writer for The Independent. He has written a biography of Tony Blair, whom he admired more at the end of his time in office than he did at the beginning.

Part 1 of an occasional series. First, everyone, apart from elected representatives, agrees that all elected representatives are lying, thieving and cheating scumbags.

Second, Ian Gibson resigns to force a by-election. Oh, no, we didn't mean him.

Then, Howard Stoate, MP for Dartford, says he is standing down from the House of Commons because the new rules on second jobs mean that he cannot continue to practise as a GP (stands for secular saint). Oh, no, we didn't mean him.

Finally, Esther Rantzen (above) confirms that she will stand in Luton South, in protest against a Labour MP, Margaret Moran, who will not be standing. Oh, no, we certainly didn't mean her.
