Private Eye sense of humour failure

As the Independent on Sunday's Katie Price correspondent - a post to which I was proud to be appointed because Alan Watkins was not available that week - I am saddened to report a failure on the part of Private Eye to grasp postmodern humour.

Street of Shame in today's issue (not online) humourlessly takes issue with last week's OK! magazine, as if it were a newspaper. It complains that the cover lines - "Katie Price: 'Alesha Dixon is welcome to Pete'"; "'Yes I do have new woman in my life': Peter Andre Reveals Love Affair - World Exclusive" - give the impression that Peter Andre is going out with someone called Alesha Dixon. This implication is not supported, the Eye points out, by the text inside.

You never.

Someone should point out to Mr High and Mighty Pants Hislop, who looked a bit silly on BBC Question Time last week being gratuitously rude to Yvette Cooper, that OK! covers are a game.

There was a line on one recently that said Katie Price (or Jordan, I don't remember which) was walking down the aisle again. If you read the story inside, or had its contents reported to you, you would have discovered that she had attended a friend's wedding.

The same edition of OK! with which today's Eye takes issue also has a cover line, "Pregnant at 40!" over a picture of Jennifer Aniston. In smaller letters, after another "Exclusive" tag, it says: "I'm ready." As any Katie Price correspondent knows, Aniston is not pregnant, but has told various media outlets that she would like to become so, and has discussed with various media outlets the issues involved in becoming so at her age.

It is called a tease. Something you would have thought that the editor of Private Eye would understand.

I suppose that Rintoul needs his subtle sense of humour if being the 'Katie Price Correspondent' fills him with pride. Furthermore Hislop's treatment of the fatuous Yvette Cooper was a delight though it must be said that it is quite difficult being rude to a politician.
