John Rentoul
John Rentoul is chief political commentator for The Independent on Sunday, and visiting fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, where he teaches contemporary history. Previously he was chief leader writer for The Independent. He has written a biography of Tony Blair, whom he admired more at the end of his time in office than he did at the beginning.

Now that Vaclav Klaus has landed him in it, in a spirit of European solidarity and helpfulness, I offer the following advice to David Cameron, pictured working on his statement for tomorrow. Use these phrases in any order:
World has moved on - realism - we were promised - Labour betrayal - never wanted it - will not let matters rest - very clear - no further powers - undertaking - any future attempts - Brussels - the Conservative manifesto - William Hague - the people must be consulted - Vaclav Klaus - proper safeguards.
Do not use any of these phrases in any order:
Cast-iron guarantee - Norway - seek to renegotiate - Maastricht Treaty - return powers from Brussels - Daniel Hannan - withdrawal - or else - Kenneth Clarke - ever closer union - Michal Kaminsky - terms acceptable to any government I lead - a ballot of party members - Single European Act - "Very well, alone!"

I just don't see it. I also don't see why Queen Mary want to have such a stilted view of modern political history?
BTW, you will be relieved to hear that this post is my last on your blog - I was hoping that your journalism would be innovative and challenging - regardless of political persuasion.
Instead what you deliver is diatribe after diatribe of New Labour propaganda. Not journalism.
