
John Rentoul
John Rentoul is chief political commentator for The Independent on Sunday, and visiting fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, where he teaches contemporary history. Previously he was chief leader writer for The Independent. He has written a biography of Tony Blair, whom he admired more at the end of his time in office than he did at the beginning.

I have no idea about the reliability or otherwise of The Guardian's front-page lead this morning, "Huge rise in birth defects in Falluja". But my confidence is not strengthened by the appearance in the fourth paragraph of "the British doctors David Halpin and Chris Burns-Cox", who "have petitioned the UN General Assembly to ask that an independent committee fully investigate the defects".
I have noted before that retired doctors Halpin and Burns-Cox are not exactly like the rest of us, in that they believe that David Kelly was murdered.
