John Rentoul

John Rentoul is chief political commentator for The Independent on Sunday, and visiting fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, where he teaches contemporary history. Previously he was chief leader writer for The Independent. He has written a biography of Tony Blair, whom he admired more at the end of his time in office than he did at the beginning.

The Friday light entertainment slot this week is provided by John Prescott, courtesy of Alastair Campbell. At a Labour fundraiser in Canary Wharf last night, Prescott said that

when he sought advice on what laptop to get, he was told just to sit next to a civil servant or a spy on the train, and they'd leave it for him.
 
And then, as he and Campbell walked to the Tube on the way home, the former Deputy Prime Minister pointed out all the banks:

"To think, we always dreamed that one day this would be ours..."
