John Rentoul

Previously he was chief leader writer for The Independent. He has written a biography of Tony Blair, whom he admired more at the end of his time in office than he did at the beginning.

What would Blair have said?

There is a little-known internet protocol that prevents people who think that Tony Blair was on balance a good prime minister from gaining access to the web. However, I have the secret bypass code, and so do a small handful of others. One of them emailed the other day to wonder "how Blair would be handling the the current financial crisis if he was still PM and Brown was still Chancellor".

I was going to reply to say: (a) I was only joking when I explained to concerned colleagues who asked what I would write about now that Blair was gone, "That's easy: I shall write 'Tony Blair wouldn't have done it like that' every week"; and (b) I don't know.
