John Rentoul

John Rentoul is chief political commentator for The Independent on Sunday, and visiting fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, where he teaches contemporary history. Previously he was chief leader writer for The Independent. He has written a biography of Tony Blair, whom he admired more at the end of his time in office than he did at the beginning.

British jobs for British workers. We thought Gordon Brown said it but didn't and couldn't mean it. But Frank Field, the MP for the Unthinkable Party, reports otherwise

Whisper it, but in the last few days, the government has made a most welcome U-turn. From 1 April, no work permits will be issued unless the jobs have been advertised at Jobcentre Plus for two weeks. Here is a real achievement. British jobs will first be offered to unemployed British workers.
