
John Rentoul
John Rentoul is chief political commentator for The Independent on Sunday, and visiting fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, where he teaches contemporary history. Previously he was chief leader writer for The Independent. He has written a biography of Tony Blair, whom he admired more at the end of his time in office than he did at the beginning.

There was something about the race for Speaker that did not quite add up. There was no Labour candidate* - in an election with an in-built Labour majority among the electorate.
Now there is.
(Thanks to Politicalbetting. Beckett was standing at the Bad Boys' End, by the door to Members' Lobby, during Prime Minister's Questions today, where I have never seen her before. Just watching how not to do it - Michael Martin tried to call a backbencher after David Cameron had asked only one of the six questions to which he is entitled.)
*Sorry: there is Frank Field, who is an authentic Hero of the People as well as a Labour MP, but I am afraid that, to too many Labour MPs, he doesn't count as one.
PS. Unfortunately, my master plan has been rumbled by Craig Murray.
